Creatures of Comfort : SS14
Creatures of Comfort, which doubles as an amazing emporium and brings the industries most exclusive, independent, hard to find, brands and budding design houses to the general public, has conjured up another successful approach to comfort wear . When they are not focused on facilitating and distributing other brand merchandise, Creatures of Comfort is designing comfy seasonal gems of their own. Creatures of Comfort definitely has an all-embracing philosophy about their clothing and it shows. Interior designer by trade, Jade Lai, started producing her own clothing collections in 2010. She said, “It seemed like the most direct way to realize my visions.” (Fashionista : How I’m Making It: Jade Lai of Creatures of Comfort) The brands amazing growth and consistent seasonal track record is proving this to be true.
This season Creatures of Comfort ventures into Tyrrhenian Sea to explore a resort collection. The collection is filled with loose fitting light weight clothing, perfect for strolling the rocky beach side and soaking up the sun. Their SS14 presentation was quick time warp as they took attendee’s on an adventure to the rocky sea side of Capri. The show was on the patio of the Maritime Hotel in New York’s Meatpacking District. Each model enter through indigo dyed drapes which were accompanied by cut outs of jetties and rocky structure that simulated a resort get away. Each garment was beautifully constructed and made with the intention of relaxation.
Most of the collection was separates which could be mixed and matched to one’s liking. The diverse offering of silhouettes is what impressed me most. The collection offered anything from a tank tops, chambray oxford button downs, long saree-esc shirts, maxi dresses, to kimono style jackets. Most fascinating was that the fabrics were the red thread and one true defining element in the whole collection. This not only show cased Jade Lai’s capacity as a fashion designer, but her commendable approach to the human body and form. I’m a big stickler for styling. As a result of crummy styling a collection can be easily subverted.
Everyone’s one want to live, look and feel different. We are all creatures of comfort in some way, shape and form. I fancied how certain models even wore straw sun hats with clogs or sandals with socks. By viewing each model as an individual character, I imagined the entire collection effortlessly adorned by a avid traveler with a certain sophistication and affection for adventure.
