Balenciaga : Alexander Wang Pre SS 2014
After taking a research trip to Guetaria in Spain, to study the birth place of designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, Alexander Wang and his Balenciaga design team have created a mastery of of work that clearly demonstrates Wang’s understanding of the late couturier’s esthetic. Wang’s youthful play on cut and unconventional draping mixed with Balenciaga’s structural and tailored inventiveness paired beautifully. If I had to sum up this collection in one word, it would be Reinterpreted. Some avant-garde details in particular that really stood out were the grommets that were riveted to the white skirts, creating a polka-dots, which everyone knows is a iconic Balenciaga . The best detail would have to be the skirt hems that were bound with point d’esprit. This treatment was also a protective technique applied to ball gowns prior to delivery. This collection is chock-full of great details, old and new. The line is really cohesive and well executed.
